The Shimano 105 FD-5801 is a second-generation 11-speed front derailleur designed for double chainring road bikes. It brings the proven cable pull and cage design from Shimano’s higher-end Dura-Ace and Ultegra groups down to the 105 tier, making it ideal for cyclists upgrading from older 5800 series derailleurs or building mid-range road bikes.
Key improvements include a repositioned cage that creates additional clearance around the frame and wider tires, addressing a real limitation of earlier 5800 designs. The derailleur uses a new integrated cable tensioner without the long leverage arm of standard 5800 models, resulting in quicker and smoother indexing. The wider cage width accommodates the slightly increased chainring spacing found on newer 2nd generation Shimano cranksets (R7000, R8000, R9100), while maintaining compatibility with all 11-speed Shimano chainsets. The braze-on mounting type integrates directly into the frame’s seat tube for a clean, fixed installation. With a 43.5mm chainline, it supports top rings up to 53 teeth and offers a 16-tooth total capacity, making it suitable for compact (50-34) and standard (52-36) setups. At 102 grams, it’s lightweight without unnecessary weight reduction that would compromise durability.
